Toast the summer and the Olympics with nothing but gold…

The summer is in full swing, and the Olympics gold rush has begun.

Team GB have made a steady start, and there have been some emotional moments already – Tom Daly finally winning Olympic Gold after so many near-misses, anyone?

Nightclubs open, events back on, friends reunited, stadiums full, sun shining (for a week, anyway), and suddenly it feels like life is back underway.

However you’re spending your summer, whether you’re on staycation, spending the summer at home with friends and family, or even if you’re lucky enough to be heading abroad… take the time to toast the summer.

And in honour of the Olympics and Team GB’s impending gold rush, why not go all out and enjoy some of these gold-themed drinks?

Gold Rush Cocktail

Where else would you start other than with a Gold Rush?!

A relatively simple drink, a Gold Rush is essentially a Whisky Sour with honey instead of sugar… but as we all know, that whisky-honey combination is incredible. If you don’t know, then you’re about to!

Ingredients: 60ml whisky/bourbon, two tablespoons of honey syrup, 25ml lemon juice, ice, and lemon slice/twist to garnish

Method: Add the whisky, honey syrup, ice, and lemon juice into a shaker and shake until icy cold. Strain into a chilled whisky or rocks glass over ice and garnish with a lemon slice/twist.

Spiced Orange Spritzer

Summer Spritzer has a nice ring to it… and I’m all for anything citrus in cocktails!

It’s not quite a summer in Seville’s orange groves, but it tastes like it – raise a glass in celebration of friends reunited this summer with a gorgeous Spiced Orange Spritzer.

Ingredients: 60ml vodka, 30ml cinnamon liquor, blood orange soda (San Pellegrino or equivalent), 1 teaspoon grated ginger, and thinly sliced blood orange to garnish.

Method: Mix the vodka, cinnamon liquor, and grated ginger in a shaker until combined. Pour into two glasses, top up with the blood orange soda, and garnish with a slice of blood orange.

Peach Bellini

Okay, it’s not technically gold, but whenever I’m drinking champagne cocktails, I feel like I need an excuse – it’s the crème de la crème of cocktails, for me.

Wimbledon has its champagne and strawberries & cream, so I’m making Peach Bellini’s the official cocktail of the Olympics and the summer of 2021.

Because for me, peach is the ultimate summer flavour – perfect for a beach, garden, BBQ, party, gathering, or just about any occasion.

Ingredients: Champagne, two ripe peaches (peeled, halved and stone removed), two chilled champagne flutes.

Method: Pop the peaches in a blender and blitz until smooth. Spoon half into the chilled champagne flutes, stirring as you pour. The ideal mix is one third peach purée to two-thirds champagne – but that’s up to you! Enjoy.

You’ve got until the closing ceremony on Sunday 8 August to make the most of the Olympics’ celebrations, so there’s plenty of time to make sure you enjoy every gold-themed drink available…

And with 339 gold medals available, I’m not sure it’s possible to toast every single one… but maybe every Team GB gold is a bit more feasible?

Whatever you’re doing, wherever you’re going, and whoever you’re with, have a fabulous summer and enjoy yourself.

Happy celebrations,

Ollie
